with many wonderful color photographs.
GUIDE TO THE NAMING OF PLANTS. David McClintock, 1980. Booklet - 37 pages - good botanical
approach - helps one understand what heathers are and how they are categorized - invaluable for
understanding the naming and categorizing of all plants.
HARDY HEATHER SPECIES. Dorothy Metheny, 1991. First heather book printed in North America - hard
cover -- maps and text - index of cultivars available in North America - large glossary. As editor of the quarterly
newsletters of the NAHS' Heather News, Dorothy started writing about and drawing the species to help other
NAHS members identify and understand their plants. Here, those articles (starting in March 1980) have been
updated and put in book form - includes Dorothy’s drawings - she completed the genera and species in time for
this publication to be released on her 90th birthday.

& white photographs. Written instructions for planting, soil, pruning, propagation, etc.
THE HEATHER FAMILY of British Columbia, A.F. Szczawinski, 1962 – 205 page book - descriptions and
drawings with locality maps of many of our natives of the ericaceae family found in BC.
HEATHERS: A GUIDE TO DESIGNING A HEATHER GARDEN. David & Betty Lambie. Small paperback -
24 pages - different garden layouts - colored illustrations - information on flowering time, foliage, etc.
HEATHERS: ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO VARIETIES. Andrew Mikolajski, 1997. Medium-sized hardcover -
64 pages - beautiful colour illustrations - step-by-step guide to planting, propagation, pruning, etc.
HEATHERS AND CONIFERS –Sue Phillips & Neil Sutherland, 1998 – Aura Books. Large paperback – 93
pages – a creative step-by-step guide on how to grow and display a wide range of Heathers and conifers.
Some very nice photographs; practical advice on choosing, creating heather & conifer beds, common problems
creative ideas for heather baskets and pots.
HEATHERS AND HEATHS –Alan Toogood – Collins Aura Garden Handbook, 1989 – small paperback – 48
pages - One of a series of handbooks planned for easy reference filled with facts and color illustrations. The
authors are all experienced gardeners. Some nice color illustrations different cultivars. Soils & Planting,
aftercare, pruning, container growing, Heathers in season.

64 pages – informative guide to growing heathers, color illustrations, how to design a heather garden, soils,
planting & aftercare. Recommended species, hybrids and cultivars.
HEATHS & HEATHERS: CALLUNA, DABOECIA & ERICA. Terry L. Underhill, 1971. Hardcover -- 256
pages - good alphabetical index of cultivars - extensive information includes history - no colour illustrations -
information on characteristics, propagation, maps and drawings.
LEGENDS IN THE GARDEN. Linda Copeland & Allan Armitage. Wings Publishers, Atlanta GA, 2001.
A collection of stories about people and places commemorated by the varietal names of American plants. Of
particular interest is the chapter on Dorothy Metheny, a NAHS Founding Member, and the colour photo of her
namesake heath Erica xwatsonii ‘Dorothy Metheny.’

Everett, 2000. An introduction to heather gardening - 18 pages - beginner’s guide: choosing plants, planting,
aftercare - some coloured illustrations.
THE WOODLAND GARDEN, Roy Forster and Alex Downie, 1999 – 180 pages - Advises on "how to create
a woodland garden using native plants. Design, selection and maintenance.
THE WORLD OF HEATHERS BOOKLET SERIES #2: RECOMMENDED HEATHERS. David Small & Ron
Cleevely, 1999. The 100 best heathers chosen by experts - 26 pages - choosing heathers - lists heathers with
similar coloured foliage and same coloured flowers - recommended list gives details of height, spread, colour
of foliage and flowers, and time of bloom - coloured illustrations.
WILD PLANTS OF SOUTH-WESTERN IRELAND; Kerry, West cork and Limerick- Charles Nelson,
Collins Press, 2001 - Cork, souvenir and simple pocket guide to the flowers and ferns illustrated with colour
photographs. More than 100 common & rate plants by flower colour. Gives flowering period and distribution.

to the wild flowers of Connemara & West Mayo illustrated with colour photographs.
WILDFLOWERS OF THE FAIREST CAPE. Peter Goldblatt & John Manning. released by Timber Press, 2000.
The large “coffee table” book, (315 pages) has lots of colour photos, information on finding and identifying
South African plants, and stresses conservation.
