About our club:

We are a member society of the North American Heather Society

Our Heather Society has been active since 1991. Our Members are from Southern Vancouver Island with members coming from Victoria all the way north to Nanaimo as well as members from the Gulf Islands. Our club meets monthly and also sponsors some special events and Heather sales. View the Constitution of the Vancouver Island Heather Society

Our Goals:

1. Providing information about heather gardening to our membership and the community

2. Providing speakers for local garden clubs

3. Publication of our newsletter, Heather Drift

4. Planning and maintaining public heather garden

Society Membership:

The VIHS welcomes members from anywhere although its active members come from around Victoria, southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

Members enjoy a wide range of resources and events throughout the year. A newsletter entitled Heather Drift is distributed regularly.

Society meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month except July and August. The sessions are held in the Masonic Hall at Mill Bay at 2:00 p.m.  A business meeting usually precedes the presentation. Refreshments are available.

Field trips may be arranged instead of indoor meetings according to the season.

Membership is available by contacting Willie McDermot-Bruce.

Heather Gardens:

As a memorial to the late Dan Cooke, a heather garden has been installed at the Farmers' Institute in Cobble Hill. The bed contains 45 varieties chosen to provide a year-round display of foliage and flower colour. Click Maps for directions.

The Society is also involved in the establishment of a number of other gardens containing heather displays. The most recent one is at the Sylvan Church on Shawnigan Mill Bay Road. It celebrates the life of Ina McDowell, one of our founding members who was also well known and loved in the community.
